(from their site) - From the beginning.....GuitarSam (originally called Play It Again Sam) opened March 4, 1981 in Montpelier, VT, which is the smallest capitol city in the United States, and the only state capitol without a McDonalds. We started out in 360 square feet of retail space, and four years later moved into 750 square feet. Eighteen months after that we knocked out a wall leading to an adjacent store and doubled our showroom area, and also added additional space for warehousing. (We performed this project at night so our landlord wouldn't suspect anything) Today we enjoy about 2000 square feet of retail, repair, and office space.

(from their site) Instructor Kent Knorr enjoys expanding his students' cultural horizons by blending lively music instruction with the history of the ukulele and an understanding of the concept of Aloha

We teach the ukulele to inspire creative expression. To open minds. To plant the seed of lifelong learning. And to share with everyone the exhilaration of playing music.

Our program gives all ages the power to make music. We teach the skills that open the door to improvisation, ease of playing and the confidence to play for others. And it's all with the ukulele, one of the easiest stringed instruments to learn and play.

( from listing's site ) - Smiley and Janet Kia's dream of opening Ukulele Source came true in September 2008. They also have another business,Pumehana Productions where wtheye, along with our partner and good friend Susie Kagami of Hawaii Music Live produce and promote Hawaiian music concerts, workshops, and private lessons with legends like Herb Ohta,Jr, Ohta-San, George Kahumoku, Jr, Keoki Kahumoku, and Nathan Aweau. So with the encouragement and support of Susie, Herb, Jr and their other good friend, Jim Nagareda of Nikkei Traditions, they opened our door on September 5, 2008. They wanted more than just a ‘ukulele store. We wanted a place where people could come in, check out all the different styles, makers, and most importantly, be able to play them and hear what they actually sound like before making a purchase. They carry what they feel are the best ‘ukuleles to fit any pocketbook.

About Jim & Liz Beloff

( from listing's site ) - Finding a ukulele at the Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea Market in 1992 inspired Liz & Jim Beloff to start Flea Market Music, Inc., publisher of the popular Jumpin’ Jim’s series of ukulele songbooks. This series is sold worldwide and is distributed by the Hal Leonard Corporation. Some of the best selling titles in the series include Jumpin’ Jim’s Ukulele Tips ‘N’ Tunes, Jumpin’ Jim’s ‘60s Uke-In and Jumpin’ Jim’s Ukulele Country as well as collections of blues, bluegrass, classical music and jazz standards arranged for ukulele by some of the finest players in the world.

Jim Beloff is the author of The Ukulele—A Visual History (1997 Backbeat Books), producer of Legends of Ukulele, a CD compilation for Rhino Records and has made two how-to-play DVDs for Homespun Tapes, The Joy of Uke #1 and #2. He is also an active songwriter who has collaborated and recorded with ukulele legends Herb Ohta (Ohta-San) and Lyle Ritz. To hear some of Jim’s music, visit the Jukebox section of this website.

Liz Maihock Beloff, with a background in film and television graphics, designs the covers and art-directs all of FMM’s songbooks, CDs and DVDs. Having been weaned on “The Lawrence Welk Show” in her Midwestern early childhood, she has a remarkable recall of American popular music. She is also a talented singer who, before teaming up with Jim, sang with a capella groups in college and New York City.

In 1999, Jim and Liz, along with Phyllis and Dale Webb, introduced a unique, colorful, and affordable ukulele called the Fluke and, later, a smaller-sized model, the Flea, that have won admirers all over the world. Jim and Liz regularly perform together at ukulele festivals in the U.S.A. and have also gone on uke tours of Japan and Australia. They truly believe in their company’s motto, “Uke Can Change the World.” You can reach them through the Flea Market Music web site at www.fleamarketmusic.com.

UKESTRUM1-cover-rotated

Hard Copy Book: $7.95
PDF Download: $4.95

“A strum is the execution of a rhythmic pattern — in a specific style”

A Guide to Ukulele Strums

One of the first skills a ukulele player learns is the art and craft of strumming, playing rhythm. This refers to an accompaniment technique suitable for the singer, singer - songwriter or someone who plays a support role for another instrument.

Strumming requires a specific set of skills. They are: 1) Memorization of chords 2) The ability to switch chords smoothly and 3) The ability to choose and execute a suitable rhythmic strum. It is this 3rd skill that is our focus in “A Guide to Ukulele Strums & Rhythmic Patterns”.

Though strumming looks natural to the casual observer, it is anything but natural to the beginning ukulele player. Even experienced players have difficulty in identifying and executing certain strums. Though this is one of those topics that is typically taken for granted, there is much to learn about rhythmic feels, accents, dynamics, strum direction, feel, percussive accents, idiomatic styles and tempo variation.

First and foremost, the subject of strumming is inseparably linked to rhythm. Though an ability to read rhythm is helpful, it’s not necessary to profit from this material.
