The Basics and Beyond!!! Take your playing to the next level.
The Internet's largest collection of information for ukulele and jazz guitar.
Buster B. Jones shows you his fast technique for changing nylon strings. If you're a gut string player you'll love this video. (YouTube link)
This technique for changing strings applies to ukuleles as well.
(Ed.) I use this technique and it works really well and saves a lot of time when restring a guitar or ukulele.
A ukulele is constructed basically like a small classical guitar. As such, s lot of the same concerns and information, technique and resources can be used for ukulele.
Here are a few links and resources for some great information on classical strings:
(source: FleaMarketMusic.com) Any classical guitar strings will work. You'd only use the D G B and E strings. As far as I know there aren't any unwound classical D strings.
(Ed.) Any gauge string would work depending on how much tension you like on your strings. A favorite brand is Savarez. I've use Savarez Alliance strings (red package) on my tenor ukes. Another favorite brand among players are D'Adarrio strings.
This is the same set as a Low "G", "C" Tuning.

Benefiting from the most recent discoveries, the classical guitar strings (three trebles strings made at first of plain gut and basses strings made of copper wound on silk (later on silver plated copper wound on silk)) have evolved into the use of monofilament nylon called plain nylon for the three trebles strings and of silver plated copper wound for the three basses strings.

Here is a tenor uke string set that I've been using for years:
C Tuning, low or high G
( from StringBYMail.com ) The Savarez 540 HT Classic Series are noted for their long life. The basses are the brightest and most rigid of the Savarez basses. You can choose between sets paired with either Alliance trebles or New Cristal trebles. The Alliance trebles are made from a carbon fiber type material (fluorocarbon). They have a slightly thinner diameter than most other nylon trebles, are very smooth to the touch and are very bright and punchy. The New Cristal trebles are made from a blended polymer nylon and yield a warmer, richer tone than the Alliance trebles.
These are available as singles or a treble set from StringByMail.com
C Tuning, low G or D Tuning, low A
They now have ukulele strings.

Savarez ukulele strings for tenor ukulele. They are made of ALLIANCE KF composite fibers which represents a big advantage, improving the sound of the instrument and enhancing its colored personality.
T2 Titanium Trebles - The titanium trebles offer a projecting tone that is brighter than traditional nylon. With its attractive purple hue and ultra-smooth feel, they are comfortable for the traditional nylon user. They are laser sorted for guaranteed precise intonation set after set and offer an ideal volume and tonal balance with the dynamic wound strings.
Pro Arté - All Pro-Arte treble strings are sorted by a sophisticated computer-controlled laser machine which performs diameter and tension measurements, ensuring true-sounding, precise trebles in every set. Pro-Arte basses are wound using silver-plated copper on a multi-filament nylon core for consistent and warm, yet projecting tone.

For a high G tuning, order a single T4601 - 1st string (e) hard tension .0285. For a low G tuning use a D'Addario Pro Arté J4704 - 4th string (D), normal tension or a D'Addario Pro Arté J4303
